| Our Mission |
The
New England Wildlife Center is a twenty-two year-old humane, nonprofit
organization dedicated to preserving wildlife and the environment
through the operation of a wildlife teaching hospital, education,
advocacy and public health and habitat intervention.
Our wildlife teaching hospital positively impacts wildlife
today by treating thousands of ailing animals each year and
releasing them back to the wild. We are one of the few organizations
working on the front lines, saving lives. The furthest reaching
impact of our hospital is the training we provide to future
advocates for wildlife and habitat preservation.
New England Wildlife Center, Inc., is a Massachusetts Corporation
in good standing with the Secretary of State and registered
as a Charitable Organization with the Office of the Attorney
General, One Ashburton Place, Boston, MA 02108. We are certified
tax exempt by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and
the Internal Revenue Service.
All of our education programs are designed to promote positive
behaviors and policies toward wildlife and the environment.
By working to preserve wildlife and habitats and by promoting
core, humane values, our efforts not only aid wildlife and
habitats, but they also help mankind.
Since our inception, the Center's hospital has treated approximately
37,000 ailing wild animals representing 225 species, everything
from hummingbirds to snapping turtles, turkeys, warblers,
swans, fox, deer, rabbits, squirrels and many others.
The Center's education programs have taught science &
nature programs to more than 100,000 elementary and secondary
school students and provided in-depth hands-on training to
more than 263 undergraduate students since the inception of
that program eight years ago. We have produced 140 half-hour
cable access television shows about wildlife.
The Center has also conducted two significant humane research
studies including the development of protocols for epidural
anesthesia in turtles and a retrospective study of the incidents
of manmade toxins in wildlife.
More than 190,000 volunteer hours have been invested into
caring for our animals research, assisting with education
programs, and maintaining our hospital. Finally, we have provided
information about wildlife, habitats and the environment to
more than 120,000 people who have called our hospital for
help.
The Center is governed by an active and committed board of
directors and directed by a licensed veterinarian with 30
years of experience in education. The Center employs a staff
of ten, and many volunteers
that help accomplish much of our mission, with the help of
close to $90,000 worth of in-kind goods and services. For
example, the Center continues to receive six tons of dog and
cat food from Boston Food Bank, approximately 1,000 pounds
of medical supplies from South Shore Hospital and bird banding
material from 3M Incorporated.
